The DGT announces the new traffic signals that enter in 2023: pay attention to their meaning

Some needed to be updated to the new mobility, others will be new, updated to new forms of mobility, such as electric scooters for example.

Traffic, within its 2022-2023 Road Safety Strategy plan, in addition to having the objective of reducing fatalities and serious injuries in road accidents by 50% compared to the figures for 2019; The plan will intervene in matters such as road safety education, the establishment of a new driving license for minors over 16 years of age using personal mobility vehicles, as well as updating the catalog of signs.


The latter includes the renewal of vertical and horizontal signs (urban and interurban) that, after 18 years in force, needed to be updated to the new mobility; and new ones will also be added with reference to new forms of mobility, such as electric scooters for example.


According to the Royal Decree by which the General Traffic Regulations are modified, still draft, for example, the STOP sign, the one for pedestrian crossings, the signs of danger due to fog, as well as the proximity of a school zone, among others.


And the one called R-118, whose purpose is to indicate the prohibition of access of electric scooters to a certain area, will be one of the new signs. Next to it is the P-35, which indicates the proximity of a braided section where vehicles will share the same space at a fork with an entry lane and an exit lane. The signals S-1b and S-2b are also incorporated, which report the presence of a multi-lane road.

For their part, all the elements of the end of prohibition signs become black instead of grey, for a better visualization on a white background.


New traffic sign P-35

P‐35. Danger due to the proximity of a section between a confluence and a fork where different lane change movements are produced by vehicles, crossing their trajectories and thereby increasing the risk of collisions.

Environmental label

R‐120. Prohibition of access to vehicles based on their environmental badge or other environmental criteria that are established. The conditions will be specified on an S‐860 companion panel or on a sign on which the sign is included.

Start of road with overtaking lane

S‐1c. Indicates the beginning of a 2+1 road, that is, one that consists of three traffic lanes and allows traffic in both directions. The central lane is intended to facilitate the overtaking manoeuvre, being alternately reserved for both directions of traffic. This sign can also indicate the branch of a junction that leads to a 2+1 road.

Sign for cycle users

R‐422. Obligation for cycle users to continue on foot. If said obligation is limited to certain periods, it will be indicated by means of a complementary panel.

Also, there will be many signals that will stop being active. For example, the signs R-308a, R-308b and R-309 that indicate the prohibition of parking on odd, even and limited use days.
